As the temperature drops and winter settles in, it may be time to adjust your skincare routine to protect your skin against cold, dry air. Winter conditions can wreak havoc on your skin, leading to dryness, flakiness, and even irritation. At Starlight Med Spa, we understand the importance of maintaining a glowy and radiant complexion year-round. Read more about our recommendations for a winter skincare routine tailored to cold weather and helpful tips to protect your skin during the frigid months.

Winter Skincare Challenges

Winter weather poses unique challenges to your skin. The harsh air and low humidity levels deplete the skin's natural moisture, resulting in dryness and tightness. Spending time indoors exposed to artificial heating systems can further strip the skin of hydration, making these issues more pronounced. Sudden temperature changes between the frigid outdoors and heated interiors can cause the skin to become more sensitive and prone to irritation. All these factors emphasize the need for a skincare routine that focuses on replenishing lost moisture and protecting the skin's barrier function during winter.

Hydration is Key

If you've visited one of Starlight's Glow Masters, you know how much we preach hydration. In the winter months, it's vital to be on top of your hydration routine, ensuring that you drink 9-13 cups of water daily, keep hot showers to a minimum, and swap using warm water on your face for cool water.

In addition to keeping on top of your water intake, you likely need to adapt your skincare routine to be more hydrating in the winter months. Choosing a gentle cleanser like Starlight Skin's Illuminating Gel Cleanser, formulated with humectant ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and organic aloe, will help soothe and hydrate your skin. When exposing your skin to the outdoors, consider layered clothing and use a humidifier indoors to help combat dryness caused by indoor heating.

Protecting the Skin Barrier

At Starlight, we encourage you to protect your skin's barrier function at all times; however, doing so is crucial in winter. The skin's barrier function shields us from the elements, but it must be protected, too.

To strengthen and protect this barrier, we recommend a regular exfoliation routine. You can use a chemical exfoliant like Starlight Skin's Liquid Glow or a physical exfoliant like Exfoliating Jelly. Exfoliating your skin will gently slough off dead skin cells and help to maintain a smooth and radiant complexion.

It is also crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays year-round.

Opt for a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to apply sunscreen on exposed areas, such as your face, neck, and hands, before heading outdoors, as snow reflection can intensify UV exposure.

Finally, sealing in the moisture with an acne-safe protective oil, like Starlight Skin's signature antioxidant-rich Argan Glow, can provide an extra layer of defence from the harsh winter elements by sealing in moisture. Use Argan Glow after your favourite Starlight Skin moisturizer. (Psst. If your skin is extra dry, we recommend reaching for StarLux Moisturizer in the winter months.)
