At Starlight Med Spa, we understand that dealing with rosacea can be frustrating. The redness, irritation, and flare-ups can affect your self-esteem and leave you longing for solutions. That’s why we’re here to help as your skincare guides. Our custom rosacea programs are designed to address the needs of your skin and provide long-term relief.
To find any skin solution, the first step is to understand the bigger picture. Let's dive in with Rosacea 101, simplified.
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes pimples or bumps. You're not alone: recent reports indicate that 3/10 Canadians are aflicted by rosacea. It typically affects the face, particularly the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. Rosacea is linked to a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including accumulative sun exposure, repetitive use of fragrant skincare, physical trauma to the skin, and hormone variations.
Symptoms of rosacea can vary, but some of the most common signs include:
Persistent redness in the center of the face
Bumps or pimples resembling acne
Visible blood vessels (also called telangiectasia, which are often noticed on the sides of the nose and in the cheeks)
Sensitivity or burning sensation on the skin
What are 5 Things You Can Do NOW to Help Your Rosacea?
Managing rosacea at home involves adopting gentle skincare habits, using soothing products, and avoiding triggers that can worsen symptoms. Here are some effective things you can do:
1. Use a Gentle Cleanser
Choose a mild, sulfate-free cleanser to avoid irritating your skin.
Avoid products with harsh fragrances, alcohol, or rough exfoliants with jagged beads (St Ives Apricot Scrub is SCARY). We recommend Illuminating Gel Cleanser to our Starlight clients because of it's 6.5 pH level and soothing ingredients like arnica, aloe, and hyaluranic acid.
2. Moisturize Regularly & Lock in Hydration
Use a non-comedogenic, fragrance-free moisturizer designed for sensitive skin to hydrate and calm irritation. Layering products correctly is always the difference between semi-hydrated skin and moisture quenched skin. A hydration serum sealed in beneath this moisturizer is important for rosacea.
Look for ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid.
To protect your sensitive lipid barrier, you may need to moisturize 3 x daily instead of just day and night. Additionally, you could add a thin layer of a non-pore clogging oil on top of your moisturizer to strengthen the seal between your skin and the outside environment.
We recommend our Starlight rosacea clients to use Eternal Glow 2.0 Youth Serum, StarLUX moisturizer, and Argan Glow multi-purpose beauty oil.
3. Sun Protection is Key
Use a mineral sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily. It does not matter if it's winter in Canada, your fragile blood vessels get targeted by UVA rays every time the distant sun touches your face.
Opt for physical sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as they are gentler on sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens can further agitate your skin barrier (and also can be toxic).
On vacation your days of tanning your face are over. Prevention is always better than fixing and if rosacea is already a problem, do not make it worse.
At Starlight we love Tizo Sunscreen because it is mineral based and one of the lower pore-clogging sunscreens on the market.
4. Avoid Triggers
Identify and avoid triggers such as spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures, and stress.
Keep a journal to track what worsens your rosacea and adjust your lifestyle accordingly.
Decrease that hot shower you love so much (it's hard for me too...) but this hot water affects your fragile capilllaries and also strips skin of retained water.
5. Add in the Good Extras
Incorporate these into your lifestyle for an immediate positive effect.
Red Light Therapy (decreases inflammation & can strengthen capillary walls).
Humidifier (hydrated skin will have a stronger moisture barrier, where your redness can calm and restore instead of being agrivated).
Hard Water Filter (this can help your moisture barrier from being stripped and it supports a healthy balanced skin pH).
