What is microneedling and how does it work?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy or skin needling, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. These micro-channels trigger your body’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin—the proteins responsible for firm, youthful skin.
By encouraging this regeneration, microneedling improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks, fine lines, and enlarged pores. The treatment supports your skin’s healing process without damaging its outer layers, making it safe for all skin tones, including darker skin.
Conditions treated with microneedling
At Starlight, microneedling effectively treats a variety of skin concerns:
-
Acne scars, including atrophic and rolling scars
-
Surgical scars and other skin scars
-
Stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs, and other areas
-
Enlarged pores and uneven skin tone
-
Fine lines and early signs of aging
-
Melasma and hyperpigmentation without worsening pigmentation issues
What to expect during your microneedling treatment
Your session begins with a thorough cleansing and application of a topical anesthetic to ensure comfort. Using our automated microneedling device, we create thousands of precise micro-channels across the treatment area. The procedure typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area.
You may feel mild vibration or scratching sensations during treatment, which are well-tolerated thanks to the numbing cream. Afterward, redness and mild swelling similar to sunburn may occur, usually resolving within 1 to 3 days.
How many treatments will I need?
Most clients require 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Mild improvements in skin texture and glow can be noticed after the first couple of treatments, while more significant changes in acne scars and wrinkles develop gradually over several months as collagen remodelling progresses.
Aftercare and protecting your results
Following treatment, it’s essential to keep your skin hydrated and protected. Use gentle cleansers and moisturisers recommended by our team, and avoid harsh skincare products for at least a week. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is crucial to prevent pigmentation changes and support healing.
Avoid sun exposure, intense exercise, saunas, and swimming pools for 48 hours post-treatment to reduce irritation and infection risks. Proper aftercare prolongs your microneedling results and maintains your skin’s health.
Is microneedling safe for all skin types?
Yes. Because microneedling is non-thermal and does not use lasers, it is safe for all skin tones, including darker skin. It carries a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to many laser therapies, making it an excellent option for those with melasma or sensitive pigmentation concerns.
Who should avoid microneedling?
Microneedling is not recommended for individuals with active skin infections, uncontrolled acne breakouts, recent isotretinoin use (within 6 to 12 months), certain blood disorders, or a history of keloid scarring. Our experts at Starlight will evaluate your medical history during consultation to ensure your safety.
